KAZAKHSTAN NATIONAL PAVILION OPEN AT 71st CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Cannes Film Festival started on 8 May at Cote d’Azure and will wind up on 19 May 2018. On the Festival’s opening day, Kazakhstan launched its National Pavilion among 230 pavilions belonging to other countries. Kazakh moviemakers’ best films of the recent years and their new works will be on display in the pavilion.

Presentations of new Kazakh films, meetings with film crews, screenings of trailers, all this will occur in the scope of the National Showcase event.

Kazakhstan opens its own presentation platform under the aegis of the Roohanee Jangyroo program and 20th anniversary celebrations of Astana and Kazakh Nation al Academy of Arts. The main focus of the presentation includes the presentation of Eurasia Film Festival that will be held in Kazakh capital on 1 - 7 July.

Eurasia International Film Festival was founded in 1998. It is accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) and is listed by an influential British magazine International Film Guide in Top 35 world’s leading film festivals. The Festival Directorate will have a number of meetings on issues related to the film market, jury panel and promotion of Kazakh films.                                                                                                  The National Pavilion’s operation in the Cannes scope strengthens Kazakhstan’s image among the global film industry players and expands opportunities for international co-productions. An official reception was organized in the National Pavilion along with performances of Kazakhstan People’s Artist Aiman Mussakhodjayeva playing a violin concerto with the state chamber orchestra Academy of Soloists, and popular singer Dimash Kudaiberghen.

Kazakh delegation includes government officials, creative intellectuals, prominent Kazakh film and television figures, students of Film and TV Department of Kazakh National Arts University.

Kazakhstan National Pavilion was launched with the support of Kazakh Ministry Culture and Sports.

For your information: annually, Kazakhfilm Studios has 20 new releases, Kazakh private film companies release 30 new films, and domestic audiences prefer to watch local films in cinemas (15% of all films distributed in Kazakhstan).

Kazakh filmmakers promote their products at the Cannes Film Festival. At the official reception given by the Kazakh delegation in Cannes, the trailer of Aruaq, the film directed by Khuat Akhmetov starring legendary Kazakh artist Assanali Ashimov, arose much interest from the representatives and guests of Cannes Film Festival, municipal officials and film commissions of the Cote d’Azure. Also, presentations of such films as Amre (directed by Jeff Vespa and starring Sanjar Madiyev), Projectionist (directed by Ermek Tursunov), Talan (directed by Bolat Kalymbetov) were organized.

It’s worth mentioning that Horse Thieves (directed by Yerlan Nurmukhambetov, announced at the last year’s National Pavilion opening), will be co-produced this year by Kazakhfilm Studios and Japan’s Tokyo New Cinema.

We would like to remind you that Kazakh filmmakers had already won the Un Certain Regard’s Grand Prix: Darejan Omirbayev with his Killer in 1998 and Sergei Dvortsevoi with his Tulip in 2008.
