Kazakh Actress Gets Cannes Film Festival’s Best Actress Award

Kazakh actress Samal Yeslyamova received Cannes Palme d’Or for Best Actress.

The world’s most prestigious film festival jury awarded her work in Ayka, a co-production of Russia, Kazkahstan, Germany, Poland and China authored by Russian director Sergei Dvortsevoi.

The part in the story of an illegal Kyrgyz migrant worker in Moscow is the second major film work for Ms Yeslamova. The first one was exactly 10 years ago in Dvortsevoi’s Tulip, which received Grand Prix of the Cannes’ Un Certain Regard .

The Palme d’Or for Best Film went to Hirokazu Kore-eda for Shoplifters, while Spike Lee’s Black Clansman got the Grand Prix.

 “This is a major event of my life! As for my work, I got immersed in the story and I wanted to make it with this director!” said Ms. Yeslyamova
